Liard River Valley, Yukon - Scene 3

Liard River Valley, YukonThe large reddish area (A) indicates a forest fire scar. The burnt forest area is easy to delineate in this Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) combination of bands 5, 4, 3. The short wave infrared information collected in band 5 (and displayed here in red) allows the identification of the burn through its characteristic red colour. Within the burn, areas of vegetation re-growth can be identified by the various shades of green. The new vegetation appears to be confined to micro-drainage channels or other low lying areas, where more moisture would be available to the vegetation and therefore promote growth. It is also possible that some of these vegetated areas were missed by the fire.
The pink line (B) running through the image is a gravel road. The small pink area beside the road at the top of the image is likely a "borrow pit", where sand and/or gravel was taken to be used in the construction of the road. The three dark blue areas are small lakes. A few small splotches of light green colour indicate small ponds or wetlands that are near-completely covered by aquatic vegetation.
